"Stop and behold as you pass by. As you are now, so once was I. As I am now you soon may be, so prepare to die and follow me." My journey into the world of Genealogy began with the death of my mother. By that time, my father and brother had also passed, as had the majority of the elders in my extended family. I was single and very much felt like a Spinster. My mother never sat down and shared the family ancestry with me. Death was not something we talked about. Sure, there were times when she tried to tell me which of the old cups and saucers were valuable and which ones were not. She would always start the conversation with "When I am gone, you will want to know these things". I wanted nothing to do with it. To acknowledge that she would some day be gone was something I could not deal with. Then one day, the inevitable happened. I was left with nothing but an attic and a storage locker full of "stuff"...Old photos-many with no names or dates on them, old postcards, old letters and newspaper clippings, my grandmother's baby book and a few obituaries. One day, I began sorting with the goal of getting rid of all of this stuff. It did not take long before I realized that this "stuff" turned out to be the keys to my past. I only had to figure out which key opened each lock. This Spinster found a treasure trove in her attic. What is hiding in yours? How do you begin to sort through it all, and why should you? You are the product of everyone who came before you. To know yourself is to know your past. We can assist you with this wonderful journey. Stop and behold as you pass by. As you are now, so once was I. |
